Overnight Oats

Overnight Oats are my absolute go to for breakfast, and they are SO CHEAP to make. You can of course jazz them up but the basic recipe is insanely cheap; they will also fill you up for hours due to the slow-release energy in the oats.

Here is the cheapest possible way to make it (I believe) – then read to the end for suggestions on how to adapt it if you have more wriggle room in your budget. Personally, I like to add foraged blackberries and chia seeds (they swell brilliantly making the oats thicker and more filling).

All costings are correct at the time of publishing.

35g Tesco Value porridge oats (2.6 pence)

20g Tesco Instant Dried Skimmed Milk (7 pence)

150ml water

Mix the oats and dried milk together well, then gradually add the water, stirring all the time. Leave in a tupperware/glass jar/other vessel overnight until the oats have absorbed the liquid. Eat!

If you like, you can add a pinch of salt, or a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg. You can add sugar. Grate an old apple and stir through (great with the aforementioned pinch of cinnamon). Add frozen or fresh berries (frozen are fantastic – cheap, no waste and potentially containing more nutrients). Add seeds or nuts if you have them. And of course, you can use fresh milk if you have it! The possibilities are endless.

If you want to read about other ways to use up those oats, have a look at Frugalwoods’ Breakfast post, Jack Monroe‘s oats tag or this post on the Frugal Family website detailing how to bulk out mince dishes using the humble oat. Enjoy!
